RED HERRING | RH Software Report

RED HERRING RH Software Report: "And Microsoft now gets a better chance to promote its Windows operating system and Office bundle in SAPs customer pool. It could also expand the use of its SQL Server database, which competes directly with Redwood Shores, California-based Oracles database product. The numbers look compelling on both fronts: 57 percent of SAP installations now run on Windows, and 27 percent run on SQL Server, according to SAP.

Then theres another feature to the story. The alliance revives speculation that Microsoft might some day acquire SAP. Delphis Mr. Hadley says Duet could be one way for the two companies to gauge how much harmony feels right.

Executives from both sides, of course, pooh pooh merger talk. Not everything has to end up in acquisitions, says Shai Agassi, president of SAPs product and technology division.

All very true, but that still leaves room for some things."
