Oracle to Provide Applications Unlimited Continued Enhancements
Oracle to Provide Applications Unlimited Continued Enhancements: "Speaking to users at Collaborate '06, Oracle President Charles Phillips detailed the company's long-term plans to provide continued enhancements to current Oracle Applications beyond the delivery of Oracle Fusion Applications in 2008.
With 'Applications Unlimited' Oracle has announced plans to enhance JD Edwards, Oracle, PeopleSoft and Siebel applications on an on-going basis. Additionally, with this new strategy, Oracle is providing more visibility into product roadmaps, and helping customers derive continual success from their current applications by delivering dedicated, world-class development and support for years to come.
'With today's announcement, we are giving customers the best of both worlds - more value from their existing applications, which we plan to enhance indefinitely, and an option to upgrade free-of-charge to future technologies, if customers have a business case to do so,' said Oracle President Charles Phillips.
Phillips continued, 'Oracle has 30,000 satisfied customers across JD Edwards, Oracle, PeopleSoft and Siebel Applications. These products represent the industry's strongest portfolio of business applications and they are uniquely tailored for virtually every industry and geography for both small and large companies. In the history of enterprise applications, no other company has amassed this breadth and depth of proven, packaged business processes and development talent."

Australian IT - Oracle backpedals on Fusion (Andrew Colley, APRIL 25, 2006)
Australian IT - Oracle backpedals on Fusion (Andrew Colley, APRIL 25, 2006): "Anderson stood his ground when asked asked if Oracle was using the ad hoc stitching approach it previously ruled out.
'You were under the assumption that Fusion as the suite of applications was a brand-new complete rewrite - take all the best ideas from whatever we had acquired and roll that out in 2008,' he said.
'That was never really the strategy.
'We have this big competitor that likes to pretend we said that, and maybe we should have made our messaging clearer.
'The idea was to get to a set of applications based 100 per cent on standards coded in Java, running on a SQL database and supporting all the different standards that you have in the middleware space.
'It turns out that the e-business suite is a good starting point from that perspective.
'It's written 80 plus per cent in Java, it uses standard SQL, so that was always going to be the starting point to take in all the best intellectual property from all the PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards, and now Siebel product lines, and use that to build next-generation products.'
Martin Power, president of AUSOUG, Oracle's Australian user group, was unable to explain Andersen's comments. "

Oracle -- Could Slow and Steady Win the Race? - Forbes.com: "In the near term, the analyst expects Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ) to grow at high single-digit rates, and could even see higher growth rates in 2008 after the release of Project Fusion, the companys plan to merge its many application products. Shares should continue to trade in the $15 to $16 range.
Longer term, a recent Morgan Stanley survey of Oracle applications customers does not bode well for Oracles organic revenue growth outlook. Nearly 80% expect flat spending on Oracles e-business suite, while 71% see flat database spending. And only 17% said they would increase license spending on the e-business suite in 2006 weaker than in database, overall software or overall IT spending."

Then Ellison goes on to say why he didn't, despite the rumors last year, buy JBoss.

Because we dont have to if it ever got good enough wed just take the intellectual property just like Apache embed it in our Fusion middleware suite, and were done. We always have that option available to us IBM always has that option available to them.' "

SAP CEO says company signed 40 'safe passage' deals - MarketWatch: "Software maker SAP AG (SAP) has signed 40 deals in the first quarter of 2006, under its Safe Passage program, Chief Executive Henning Kagermann said Thursday in an interview with Bloomberg-TV.
The program is aimed at wooing away customers from SAP's closest rival U.S.-based Oracle Corp. (ORCL).

Computerworld > Kagermann: SAP to expand on-demand offerings: "SAP will not cannibalise its enterprise software business to support the burgeoning software-as-a-service (SaaS) trend, but it will branch out beyond hosted CRM (customer relationship management), to offer other applications on-demand, chief executive officer Henning Kagermann says.
SAP plans to continue its strategy to grow organically rather than embrace the latest industry fads, such as software-on-demand, with too much gusto.
However, SAP will continue to grow its on-demand software model as necessary, to keep up with competitors such as Oracle and Microsoft. Well never substitute our core business, but [on-demand] will be an additional revenue stream, Kagermann says."

The Four Hundred--Oracle Indefinitely Extends the Life of JDE World, EnterpriseOne
The Four Hundred--Oracle Indefinitely Extends the Life of JDE World, EnterpriseOne: "Schiff also says that the EnterpriseOne suite will be upgraded this week with the promised 8.12 release, and Oracle will announce plans to put out a future 9.0 release. Not being in charge of the EnterpriseOne product line, Schiff could not say what features will be in this release, but we will chase it down in our Four Hundred Stuff newsletter.
By reinvigorating the JDE product lines, Oracle has very cleverly sidestepped a very thorny issue with the JDE installed base: support of i5/OS, DB2/400, and possibly RPG with the future Project Fusion application suite. I have been saying there is an ever-so-remote chance that Oracle might implement Fusion in RPG IV--and when I said remote, I meant like me winning PowerBall and I don't even gamble--but Schiff says just forget that. 'Fusion will not be implemented in RPG. It will be written in Java,' he says. As for DB2/400 and i5/OS, Schiff says that no decision has, as yet, been made with regards to the Fusion application suite. By extending the life of JDE World and JDE EnterpriseOne, Oracle can say that it is supporting the iSeries. The issue will become how much functionality gets put into World and EnterpriseOne, and how the functionality gap between these suites and the future Fusion suite opens up. At some point, if the functionality gap gets too large, customers who want the most advanced software from Oracle will have to move to Fusion, and that will mean they will have to drop the JDE suites and probably the iSeries, too. But, if Oracle truly does enhance World and EnterpriseOne, then that day may never come at all. "

"SAP Reports Strong Q1, Reveals On-Demand ERP Plan " a Managing Automation news article: "Software revenue in SAP's Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific regions grew 14% and 8%, respectively, during the period. Asia/Pacific results were hurt by Japan, where SAP saw an 18% software revenue decline for the quarter. Kagermann said SAP does not believe the result represents a long-term trend for the company in Japan, and that SAP expects improvement.
SAP's expenses for the quarter grew by 20%, led mostly by the company's ongoing staffing increases. Kagermann said SAP has hired 3,400 employees in the past year. Fifty-six percent of those were hired into research and development roles; 34% of the new hires were added in India and other low-cost countries. SAP's Man In America - Forbes.com: "German software giant SAP Thursday posted revenue growth of 18% in the last quarter--and watched as investors, who wanted even better numbers, knocked the company's shares down.

Bloomberg.com: Top Worldwide
Bloomberg.com: Top Worldwide: "``Margins were a little weak,'' said John Segrich, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in London, who rates SAP ``overweight.'' He had forecast a first-quarter margin of 23 percent.
Kagermann in an interview said he's confident the company will reach its target for margin growth this year and that investors shouldn't expect the margin to develop in a ``linear'' way throughout the year. SAP's target is to exceed a 30 percent margin by the end of 2007, after 28.3 percent at the end of 2005.
He also predicted the U.S. will continue to expand ``above average'' and repeated 2006 forecasts for profit and sales growth. SAP targets license sales this year to advance 15 percent to 17 percent, while earnings per share excluding some costs will reach between 5.80 euros and 6 euros from 5.01 euros last year.
Total operating expenses rose to 1.58 billion euros in the first quarter, with costs for research and development as well as for marketing increasing. Kagermann said the company spent more in the quarter to help reach its growth targets.
The company hired 774 additional people in the first quarter. SAP's plan for this year is to hire about 3,500 new people. "

Application Development Trends - Oracle's horizontal move into the telco vertical
Application Development Trends - Oracle's horizontal move into the telco vertical: "Oracle unveiled a major platform initiative Tuesday aimed at telecommunications providers. The new Oracle Service Delivery Platform (SDP) is designed to support carriers, network operators and systems integrators who are moving to service-oriented architectures.
The new SDP will extend Oracle Fusion Middleware for network-centric applications, enabling users to access next-gen mobile, voice services and enterprise apps through traditional communication networks. It's also designed to provide access to next-gen networks based on IMS and VoIP infrastructure.
Oracle's move into telecom isn't radical, says John Mazur, research director with Gartner's carrier network infrastructure team. The database giant already has a well-established installed base on the IT and business side of telco. In fact, Oracle claims 90 percent of the world's telco carriers use its databases. And its recent Siebel acquisition may have given the company the lion's share of telco CRM as well."

Agassi: SAP undaunted by Oracle | InfoWorld | News | 2006-04-05 | By Paul Krill
Agassi: SAP undaunted by Oracle InfoWorld News 2006-04-05 By Paul Krill: "Speaking at the Software 2006 conference on Wednesday, Agassi disputed any contention that Oracle leads in applications. He said that prior to the PeopleSoft (Profile, Products, Articles) acquisition in 2004, SAP's lead over Oracle was 30 percentage points; now, it is 35 market share points.
'I guess that's the reason the applications [are] called Oracle11i. The i is for imaginary,' Agassi said.
During his presentation, Agassi touted SAP's NetWeaver platform and ESA (Enterprise Services Architecture) strategies as well as the proliferation of 'micro-vertical' solutions, which are highly specialized applications. He also counseled a customer from Shell that implementing the ERP giant's new NetWeaver architecture must be done at a pace that suits a particular installation. "

Report finds SAP winning war with Oracle
The new report from Cambridge, Mass.-based Forrester Research Inc. found that SAP has stronger momentum than Oracle, due largely to its major head start in the business applications market. It also concludes that SAP has a better partnership strategy than Oracle and has done a better job of articulating the value of its technology to customers.
'[SAP] built those partnerships at the application level, and they also have the largest customer base,' said R. 'Ray' Wang, a Forrester business applications analyst and a co-author of the report. 'A head start, a partner ecosystem and a customer base are pretty much key ingredients for success.'
Alternatively, the report found that Oracle's strong middleware platform and better support of open standards make it the right choice for customers who rely heavily on custom development in conjunction with packaged applications. "
