SAP admits to integration oversight - Builder - ZDNet Asia

SAP admits to integration oversight - Builder - ZDNet Asia: "Simon Dale, CTO at SAP Asia-Pacific, said the NetWeaver infrastructure software was created in response to problems faced by businesses when they tried to integrate multiple applications.
'We didn't realize how important technology [integration] was to our customers until we found out that most of their problems were caused by us not paying attention to [this area],' he said during a briefing Tuesday to discuss SAP's latest products, such as CRM on-demand.
Dale added: 'We always thought that once our customers run SAP, we didn't have to worry about anything else. But we discovered that as customers grew their operations, they were running other things besides SAP.
'Integrating [different applications] was costing them a lot of money,' he noted. "

Software's New Predators

Software's New Predators: "The irony is that SOA, Web services, and new industry standards could tip these legacy systems into commodity products. Soon customers begin complaining that it costs too much to maintain the legacy ERP systems at the bottom of the architecture.

By 2010, word gets out about a new type of application built using model-driven development tools. The new software comes with built-in Web services, intuitive user interfaces, embedded analytics, and easy-to-build applications. Venture capitalists rush in to fund the new companies, setting off a gold rush not seen since the Internet bubble. It has happened before.

SAP: Tapped for Bigger Things

SAP: Tapped for Bigger Things: "Finally, from 2004 to 2005, Oracle completed a series of sizable acquisitions that created significant uncertainty in the marketplace and, we believe, a window of opportunity for competitors, like SAP, to lure customers away. We believe that through its offer of lifetime support for many of the solutions that it acquired during this period, Oracle was successful in mitigating significant customer losses. As the dust has settled, we think Oracle has reemerged as a fierce and focused competitor.

'In other words, Salesforce is under more competitive pressure than ever before and yet its fundamentals are improving.'"

SAP's Big Bankroll

SAP's Big Bankroll: "SAP is building an ecosystem, or network, around NetWeaver that is composed of companies selling related applications and developers who write to it, as well as reseller partners and consultants.
The issue of standards has become critical as the industry has moved to embrace trends, such as service-oriented architecture (SOA), which enables the creation of applications that are built by combining loosely coupled and interoperable services.
SAP's approach to SOA is complex, but simply stated, the company is breaking up its large applications into modules that can be delivered as a service, explains Genovese. Each component, or mini-app is 'wrapped' in NetWeaver and delivered to the customer. 'It's sort of a stealth strategy for world domination,' she jokes.
But getting NetWeaver in the door is a serious business. After a slow start, SAP has done well selling NetWeaver into its huge installed base, but growth has slowed, says Bert Hochfeld, who runs a research firm under his own name.
'SAP needs hot applications. At the end of the day, it doesn't have them,' he says.
Moreover, SAPmissed its targets in the second quarter, a stumble that led some investors to fearing that the company -- and IT spending in general -- may be slowing. "

Oracle Fusion Applications Update: Less is More

Oracle Fusion Applications Update: Less is More: "With that in mind, and with Applications Unlimited going full throttle, Oracle really doesnt need anyone to implement Fusion 1.0 any time soon. As long as Oracles customers buy into the new roadmap, and keep upgrading their existing applications and, by the way, implement Fusion Middleware as well, whether they implement Fusion 1.0 or Fusion 5.0 matters little to Oracle.
Thats the headache factor for Oracles competitors, and its a doozy. Of course, Oracle has its own headache factor to worry about, as in what to do about migrating customers to Fusion 1.0 or 5.0 without making it as much fun as a migraine at a jackhammer convention. But for now, Fusion 1.0 is looking a lot better than it has ever looked before, and that cant be good news for Oracles competitors. Aspirin, anyone? "

SAP Shares The Wealth - Forbes.com

SAP Shares The Wealth - Forbes.com: "German software giant SAP kicked off its newest incentive program Tuesday: Investing in companies that use its products. SAP bought a small stake in Redwood City, Calif.-based Questra, which makes software that lets device manufacturers remotely monitor and troubleshoot their products in the field.
Just as important as what Questra does is how it does it--the 12-year-old firm uses SAP's (nyse: SAP - news - people ) NetWeaver software line. The investment is the first time SAP has dipped into a $125 million venture fund established in May to build out NetWeaver."

The composite application integrates Questra's intelligent device management (IDM) technology suite with SAP's service and asset management software so that manufacturers can monitor remote devices and automatically access equipment data and fault information via their SAP application. SAP certified the composite application for use on NetWeaver in July.
The equity investment will help Questra speed up its development of more composite applications as well as expand its sales and support operations, Emil Wang, president and chief executive officer of Questra, said. "

Companies deliberate mySAP ERP upgrades: "Still, some company chief information officers (CIOs) aren't ready to make the move, according to Colin Masson, a research director at Boston-based AMR research. Masson leads a chemical and process research team covering IT developments in the chemical industry.
In a recent advisory to clients, Masson said company CIOs won't be convinced to upgrade until SAP does a better job of explaining the latest features and functionality that can be leveraged from mySAP ERP and NetWeaver.
'SAP must also prove that an integrated system from a single vendor is better and less expensive than R/3 with best-of-breed, third-party extensions,' according to Masson's AMR Alert to clients, 'CIO Dilemma, part 1, Harvest Value of SAP R/3 or Upgrade to mySAP ERP?'"

Oracle vs. SAP: Picking the right path to SOA

Oracle vs. SAP: Picking the right path to SOA: "'SAP's primary goal is to make sure that their applications are supported and their partners are supported,' said Forrester analyst R. 'Ray' Wang. 'Oracle's framework is definitely a lot more open in the sense that the standards adoption is much more open, but the applications being built on top of the middleware have yet to be proven.'
Wang added that for folks mulling SOA, it may not necessarily be a question of deciding which vendor's approach is best, but rather a question of determining how many SOA ecosystems they can support. For example, he said, large companies with many suppliers and partners may have to support two or three SOA ecosystems over the long term. "

InformationWeek Business Process Management Oracle Turns To Germany To Compete In Business Process Management August 3, 2006: "One of IDS Scheer's strengths is that its ARIS Platform is already integrated with the leading business process design and management software firms, such as Lombardi Software, Intalio, or Tibco's Staffware. The ARIS Platform has modules for managing business processes springing out of SAP application operation and is closely integrated with SAP's NetWeaver, as well as Microsoft's BizTalk Integration Server and IBM WebSphere.
Microsoft early this year made a bid to make BizTalk the integration server of some Oracle customers by offering BizTalk adapters for JD Edwards, Siebel, and PeopleSoft applications, all owned and now sold by Oracle.
Tibco has carried its business process management forward into 'events monitoring mode,' letting an automated system watch business processes for abnormalities that may indicate employee deceit or fraud.
By reselling the IDS Scheer integration platform, Oracle gains greater compatibility with competing business process systems without actually being required to do all the integration work itself. "

All Bases Covered

All Bases Covered: "In part, I thought back to my experience at Informatica. Although we were on the pioneering edge and pushing what I believe was a state-of-the-art product for analytics, we just did not have the go-to-market presence that a larger company like SAP has today. Although we built a good product, if large companies like SAP got their act together, it was going to be very, very hard for the standalone players in analytics, largely because analytics is too tied to the core business process. It can't be treated as a bolt-on application. So, it was the inflection point of the technology at SAP becoming more mature, and my sense that SAP could win by what I call mass and class. By 'mass,' I mean the weight of our customers and our 60 percent market share. By 'class,' I mean two things, the first being the products and technology SAP began to develop in the last two or three years that were starting to become best of breed in many areas. The other part of the class aspect was the team that Leo [Apotheker] and Shai [Agassi] had developed, with Leo on the sales side and Shai on the product side. This was also attracting many of the most talented industry people I had met from Siebel, PeopleSoft, Oracle and others. We have got a big plan ahead of us, and I'm happy to play a part in orchestrating it."
