Oracle, SAP rivalry heats up further in the Philippines - ENGLISH NEWS - NEWS - PC-Welt - pcwelt.de: "Wagnig war in the business applications space, Oracle Corp. and SAP are now wooing each other's Philippines customers -- further escalating their rivalry.
For the past two weeks, Oracle and SAP have each been parading market share figures and analyst reports disputing the other's claim of leadership in the region. Both companies have also announced programs that aim to lure each other's customers.
Oracle recently announced a program called Oracle Fusion for SAP or 'OFF SAP', promising to 'buy back' a customer's SAP licenses in exchange for migration to Oracle products. The program covers all counterpart products from SAP regardless of how far back the version is, according to Mark Gibbs, Oracle Asia Pacific's senior vice president for applications."

Oracle vows unlimited support for acquired apps - FINANCIAL, MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS - ENGLISH NEWS - NEWS - PC-Welt - pcwelt.de: "At Oracle's Collaborate 2006 user conference in Nashville, Tennessee, last week, the company announced that it will indefinitely support and upgrade the products it gained through its acquisitions of PeopleSoft and Siebel Systems, as well as its own line of applications.
Oracle had previously committed to support the products only through 2013.
Jesper Andersen, Oracle's senior vice president of application strategy, said the move was made to ease the fears of users of the older products. 'We have 30,000 customers and need to make sure we treat them well [so] they'll stay with Oracle a long time,' he said."

Pennsylvania agency adopts SAP and Duet at one whack: "The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has started rolling out a $36.5 million SAP AG software installation that will include the much-touted Duet technology, which enables interoperability between SAP's ERP applications and Microsoft Corp.'s desktop products.
By installing Duet with the mySAP ERP 2005 applications, the commission expects to avoid the need for extensive user training in SAP, said Jeff Mesaric, CIO of the Harrisburg, Pa.-based agency.
'The training is going to be less complex,' he said. 'The information [in SAP] will be accessible throughout the organization to information workers [via Microsoft applications]. That will be a tremendous asset.' "

Irreplaceable? - Forbes.com: "For 30 years all of Oracle Corp., maker of the database software that drives thousands of big businesses around the world, has revolved around its founder. Larry Ellison owns a 23% stake worth $18 billion, and he rarely sells. He tweaks Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people )'s print ads; he fiddles with its press releases; he peppers techies with arcane questions. 'I've run engineering since Day One, and I still run engineering,' he says. But Ellison is turning 62 on Aug. 17. Isn't it about time he identified a successor? Bill Gates, 11 years younger, managed to do that. "

Processor Editorial Article - Coping With Compliance: "If you depend on a major vendors ERP or CRM app, you may have compliance software on your network already. Take SAPs mySAP ERP Financials (www.sap.com), an accounting tool for midsized and global firms alike. It has a number of governance features to cope with Sarbox and other regulations (and languages and currencies) in foreign markets. Its also COSO-compliant, has an advanced audit and reporting system, and boasts a number of industry-specific features.
And then theres Microsoft. If the notion of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on compliance tools is daunting, you can build a compliance system with the Microsoft tools you already have, adding SharePoint and InfoPath to the mix (www.microsoft.com). Just ask Remedy Intelligent Staffing, which used Microsoft tools to build a Web-based library where all control documents are stored. It has basic document management features, such as version control, access control, and timestamps, to give auditors the raw data they need. "

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), operator of a 532-mile-long toll highway system with $580 million annual toll revenues and 2,300 employees, will deploy Duet. The PTC is a joint Microsoft-SAP customer. Duet connects SAP back-end systems with Microsoft front-end Office products, such as Outlook, and can be purchased from either SAP or Microsoft. But the software comes with some notable pre-requisites. Companies using Duet need to be running mySAP ERP 2005, NetWeaver, and Microsoft Exchange Server and Windows Server 2003. Fail to have any of those requirements and SAP's Kevin Fliess said 'it's a pretty long runway to get to Duet.' In this interview with SearchSAP.com, Fliess, SAP's vice president of product marketing for emerging solutions, speaks frankly about Duet, its benefits and challenges moving forward."

SAP and the Competition: End of the Free Ride?
SAP and the Competition: End of the Free Ride?: "So SAP will go back to trying to out-maneuver and out-execute Microsoft and Oracle in the sales trenches. That wont nearly as easy as it used to be: Both competitors have proven themselves to be worthy opponents, and making Kagermann eat his promise that SAPs year-end estimates will still hold has become the prize that is motivating the Oracle and Microsoft sales forces as never before.
In the end, SAP has had the advantage over the last five years of working on internal development and productization while its competitors have spun their wheels in the M&A world. Those advantages now have to start coming out more, or SAP risks being forced to fight a war on someone elses turf.
As the last quarter proved, counting on Oracle and Microsoft to be their own worst enemy isnt going to work anymore. SAP now has to win, instead of just letting its rivals lose. Or else."

InformationWeek mySAP At SAP, R/3 Is A Distant Memory July 24, 2006: "Earlier versions of SAP's ERP software were bundles of applications adapted for different industries. MySAP ERP 2005, in contrast, combines key applications, such as general ledger, accounts receivable, and HR administration, into a single block known as the ERP core component. Businesses extend those apps to meet their needs using Web services provided by SAP and other vendors, managed by Solution Manager, a tool built into NetWeaver. A mechanism called the Switch Framework is used to turn application functions on and off.
SAP provides some 500 Web services through its Web site. Next year, the vendor plans to release a new version of NetWeaver, called the Business Process Platform, with a repository of built-in Web services. SAP used to sell NetWeaver as a separate product. With mySAP ERP 2005, NetWeaver comes included. It's required to run the applications and includes administration and development tools that used to be part of R/3. "

Tatra Vectras journey from legacy to ERP - Express Computer
Tatra Vectras journey from legacy to ERP - Express Computer: "It needed a year to evaluate ERP vendors. The company took the help of an external agency to study its existing systems and document the process. Documentation took five months. Tatra Vector evaluated top ERP vendors such as SAP (mySAP), Oracle (E-Biz), Microsoft, PeopleSoft and Ramco. Since ours is a mid-sized enterprise, SAPs mySAP All-in-One (for SME) had most comprehensive modules catering to our automotive industry. The decision to finalise on SAP in September 2005 was based on three factorscost of the software, implementation time / cost, and post-sales support. SAP had a distinct price advantage based on the number of user licences, type of user licence, and the developmental, professional and limited professional licencing system. There was a wide choice of implementation and hardware partners, and SAP had vertical-specific best business practices that reduce implementation time and cost. Nevertheless, Ethiraj states that SAPs implementation cost is still very high, and that the vendor should standardise base implementation charges billed by its implementation partners. Reason? Between two prospective SAP implementation partners, Tatra Vectra found one charging x amount, while the other was asking for almost twice that for the same implementation."

Oracle, nevertheless, has been picking up market share, even according to SAP's own calculations. While SAP's share of the enterprise application market increased from 21.4% to 21.7% between its first and second quarters, SAP CEO Henning Kagermann acknowledged that Oracle increased its share of the market from 8.8% to 10% during the same time.
Kagermann said ERP software vendors have been engaging in aggressive price competition and discounting in an effort to gain market share, although he declined to say how deep those discounts run.
Enterprise applications aren't the only battlefield between SAP and Oracle. Earlier this week Oracle president Charles Phillips told industry analysts that sales of its Fusion middleware products exceeded $1 billion in its fiscal 2006. Thursday Kagermann said SAP's NetWeaver middleware, a key component of its ESA blueprint, is winning market acceptance with some 31,000-plus NetWeaver components installed at customer sites. heise online - SAP confirms forecasts for fiscal year as a whole: "Meanwhile an expert on German labor law has warned of a possible burden of millions of euros weighing down on the future account balances of SAP as a consequence of the introduction of a works council. 'Works councils are expensive,' Gerrick von Hoyningen-Huene, expert on labor law at the University of Heidelberg, told the German news agency dpa. The additional costs a company would have to bear for a works council on average amounted to 500 euros per employee per year, he stated. With its staff in Germany amounting to about 14,000 people SAP could hence expect to face additional costs of some seven million euros annually, he remarked.
'Those employees on the works council are relieved of their regular duties and hence do not contribute directly to the company's output', Mr. Hoyningen-Huene explained. In addition there were the costs of organizing employee meetings -- as well as higher administrative and other costs -- to be reckoned with, as the council had a share in the decision-making as it related to working hours, vacations, additional benefits and the hiring of new employees, he pointed out. The works council had to be informed in writing of all these decisions, for example, and would meet repeatedly to discuss them, he added."

Those sales are lumped with database revenue, which makes it difficult for analysts to gauge how Oracle's Fusion middleware products are selling against offerings from competitors like IBM and BEA Systems.

CRN Business Intelligence, ERP SAP Kills Reseller, OEM Alliance With Business Objects: "Business Objects' reseller agreement with SAP fell apart just a few months after the companies fired off a press release last November heralding the deal's renewal. Still, both sides cast the alliance's recent dissolution as a relatively friendly falling out.
'It had run its natural course,' said Jill Henry, Business Objects' director of European alliances.
The partnership originated in September 2001, when SAP reached a deal with Crystal Decisions to resell Crystal Reports and license some of its components to fill out the formatted reporting capabilities of SAP BW (Business Warehouse). Business Objects inherited the contract through its 2003 purchase of Crystal Decisions and subsequently extended its contract with SAP several times. Salesforce.com blasts Microsoft SaaS plans - Computer Business Review: "'The world has changed. Everyone and everything is becoming a service,' said Benioff. 'It was not so long ago that most executives and companies disregarded the movement to software as service, claiming it was limited technically, or isolated to a specific market segment such as small business. Now, everyone agrees that the future of software is not software at all, but rather an industry dominated by tens of thousands of heterogeneous services delivering everything from traditional Office productivity to verticals to VoIP to ERP and CRM systems. SAP Gets Zapped - Motley Fool - MSNBC.com: "The big concern: Is this miss mostly a one-time event, or does it portend a long-term problem?
Actually, there is evidence that the latter is the case. Why? A big problem is competition from Oracle(Nasdaq: ORCL). In fact, Oracle posted strong preliminary results for its second quarter. For example, its revenue is expected to have increased by 25%.
Over the past few years, Oracle's strategy has been to buy a variety of major companies in the ERP space -- spending nearly $19 billion on such acquisitions. This adds to its product offering but also means more opportunities to find cost savings. SAP, on the other hand, has eschewed acquisitions. "

The changing face of Oracle - Computer Business Review
The changing face of Oracle - Computer Business Review: "Yet Oracle seems to be getting to grips with the change, both operationally and philosophically. In EMEA it has close to 4,000 staff dedicated to business applications, representing a significant expansion compared with three to four years ago.
This is because its sales approach is increasingly industry and value-based, because the mantra for the next generation of applications is fairly simple: control the platform and you control the process; control the process and you win the business. The vendor that controls the process has the biggest buy-in from the business and wins influence around that. With a database, middleware and application stack, Oracle is pitching for optimisation and process control"

Azul gets Oracle appserver badge
Azul gets Oracle appserver badge: "AZUL SYSTEMS, one of the most interesting of recent server companies, has taken another step forward by gaining certification on Oracles Application Server 10g.
Although Oracle once tried its hand at appliances with its Raw Iron dedicated database server project, it has no plans to go the extra yard and put its name on the tin. That pleasure will be left to Azul, which develops what it calls the Compute Appliance, accelerating Java virtual machine performance on servers that tap up to 16 Vega 24-core processors. "

With nearly 36,000 employees in 50 countries, SAP has long been a worldwide synonym for enterprise software."

Fewer bugs in system, but still no savings | TheNewsTribune.com | Tacoma, WA
Fewer bugs in system, but still no savings TheNewsTribune.com Tacoma, WA: "More than 2 1/2 years after Tacoma installed its multimillion-dollar computer system, city officials point to progress in working out the bugs, increasing user training and gaining efficiencies.
But the $75 million investment has yet to deliver promised savings in city payrolls. And many employees still struggle to use it. Among the unresolved issues:
Auditors complain that clunkiness in some areas creates a potential for accounting errors that wont get caught.
Installation and care of the system added employees to the work force, rather than cutting workers through automation as originally promised. Five extra customer service representatives remain on the job in utilities, in part to handle greater workloads as a result of the more sophisticated software. The computer services department ballooned in both budget and personnel; about 50 workers remain dedicated to the division that maintains the citywide network.
Employees still complain the software is difficult to use and that they lack adequate training and user manuals. Auditors in February called for a major investment in training to help the city wring the most from the system. That hasnt happened."

IT Conversations: Thomas Kurian - Oracle's Fusion Architecture
IT Conversations: Thomas Kurian - Oracle's Fusion Architecture: "As the enterprise middleware space migrates to Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), Thomas Kurian, VP of development for Oracle's middleware products, is happy to announce that they have brought their 'A' game, and that they are ready to play. Shedding light on Oracle's new Fusion Architecture, Kurian explains how recent acquisitions and newly developed technologies combine to create a unified middleware suite.
Fusion Architecture constitutes the unification of three important architectural trends. First, the rise of grid computing, both at the processor level and at the storage level, using inexpensive hardware. Second, the explosion of data acquisition and the difficulty trying to extract useful information from the huge mass of data. Third, making business processes more flexible by using Service Oriented Architecture. "

Four Hundred Stuff--Oracle Heralds SOA 2.0 with New Fusion Middleware
Four Hundred Stuff--Oracle Heralds SOA 2.0 with New Fusion Middleware: "According to Oracle, the new EDA product is a key component of SOA 2.0, 'the next-generation of SOA that defines how events and services are linked together to deliver a truly flexible and responsive IT infrastructure.' (If you thought that's what SOA 1.0 was supposed to deliver, we've got some ocean-front property in Arizona to sell you.)
Oracle says the EDA suite enables companies to react more quickly to changing business conditions by helping them build, deploy, and manage event-driven applications, without the complex and expensive software engineering you might think such flexibility entails. 'The underpinning of this new responsive IT infrastructure, SOA 2.0, results in enterprise flexibility and IT modularity, as well as rapid pattern detection and response,' says Amlan Debnath, vice president of Fusion middleware at Oracle.
